Chapter 16: Jo

Jo’s feet patted down the corridor. What about the security cameras? Surely the agents in the security room would see her? What if she were dressed as a normal agent or even better, dressed in disguise? Jo thought quickly. Her reporter disguise was drying on the clotheshorse in the laundry room. She’d washed it just that morning after Disguise class. Jo knew it included a dark colored blazer. If she could just switch that blazer with her spy school one, perhaps the people in the camera room would assume she was just a normal agent.

Jo’s heart began beating fast. She wheeled her suitcase in front of her, trying to keep it out of view of the cameras behind her and stopped at the laundry room. Then she slipped inside the laundry room and looked around. It was dark. She did not wish to turn on the light in view of the cameras. Then the security agents would see what she was about to do.

Jo felt around on the tops of the driers until she made her way to the clothes horses down the back. She ran her hands over the metal racks until she touched something material-like. It felt like someone’s blazer. She pulled it off the clotheshorse and, ducking down underneath the ironing table, pulled Katie’s torch-pen from her pocket. The torch-pen light lit up in Jo’s hands. Yes, she had found the right blazer. She snapped the torch-pen off. For good measure, Jo decided she would take her brown wig too. Slipping on the wig and blazer, Jo made her way back out to the corridor and resumed walking, now dressed in her reporter disguise.

Soon Jo reached the tunnel. Lifting her eye up to the retina scanner, she waited for the little light to whisk past her eyes but it didn’t.

“That’s funny,” she whispered. She tried again but still nothing happened. Putting her hand on the door, Jo noticed it felt loose. She spread both of her hands on it and leaned to the left. To her surprise the door rolled open. Jo blinked. It wasn’t supposed to do that. Who could have done this? Jo looked back into the foyer. There was no one around. Perhaps the security team was working on it, making adjustments to it?

She hauled her suitcase into the tunnel and shut the door behind her, the lamps lighting up the darkness like fireflies.

To Jo’s amazement the bookcase retina scanner didn’t work either. Climbing into the bookcase, she leant to one side. The bookcase spun around until she could see the empty entrance room in front of her and the lift in the distance.

Jo’s heart flip-flopped. She was nearly there. Only a short lift ride and then she would be free. She hauled her suitcase into the lift and selected the ground floor button. With a whoosh the lift took off, but this time, it didn’t clank and bang. Jo grinned. Katie must have succeeded in persuading Professor Morse to get it fixed.
